After coming under fire from an Irish court ruling that its bread isn’t real, Subway has finally admitted its bread is in fact sponges from its kitchens.

Subway had pulled a fast one for decades by grabbing sponges – both of the clean and dirty variety – and using them as bread. The sponges have been hearty Italian, parmesan oregano, multi-grain flatbread and many more. While customers have long assumed the meat and cheeses aren’t real, they feel duped on the bread sponges.

“I really thought I was eating fresh,” one customer said on the condition of anonymity. “I had been eating Subway almost daily since that one guy who went to jail lost all that weight. I can’t believe I ingested all that.”

Subway was adamant to clarify though that the Sun Chips are still real, as are most of the cookies.
