After months of investigating, the Hamster can confirm Monday that Rhode Island – once the 13th state in the country – actually seceded from the Union in 2011 and no one has really noticed.

The Hamster made several FOIA requests to state government in Rhode Island and sent several members of our investigation team to the state to dig deeper, and found a handful of records showing the state seceded in October 2011. Rhode Island residents who spoke to the Hamster said they “vaguely remember that, yeah” and “was that on the news?”

Residents polled in neighboring states, though, hadn’t heard anything of the secession. Citizens in both Connecticut and Massachusetts were dumbfounded at the news, with some adding “was that the state right next to us?”

The Hamster has also learned – though cannot yet confirm – that Rhode Island might not be an actual island.
