MSNBC political correspondent Steve Kornacki is frantically trying to work out a scenario on the network’s interactive election map where the U.S. expands to 54 states later tonight, just in case it happens.

With most polls closed and vote totals coming in and no new states added today, the scenario seems unlikely. But still, Kornacki says, you can’t count it out.

“Now, here’s a scenario we should all look out for,” Kornacki enthusiastically said to the camera. “Ohio goes to Biden, Texas goes to Trump, North Carolina is too close to call BUT the U.S. adds four states later tonight and at least three go to Biden. This is where things get interesting.”

The MSNBC election night roundtable is currently debating the possibility, as well as the chance the election is suddenly rained out and rescheduled for a double header in 2024.
