Research available at present has been unclear whether or not it is still safe for consumers to lick produce before purchasing – a point of confusion for many shoppers.

Consumers have often been confused on rules about masks, social distancing and general spread of the disease. But lack of clarity on if they can still taste test produce before purchasing has specifically been a point of contention.

“I have no idea if this green pepper is good or not,” one shopper told the Hamster as she left Costco. “But I don’t want to kill my grandparents or someone else’s grandparents, so I’m sacrificing.”

Some stores have commented that they always disapproved of produce licking, though they haven’t all been up front on the matter. Likewise, the CDC has not yet answered questions on this topic, despite widespread pressure.
