A local newspaper is excited to announce it is now just five subscriptions away from getting to pay its past-due electric bill, a major milestone in getting to save local news.

The Ashwaubenon Daily Times Gazette Bee Tribune said in a Facebook post Tuesday that if just five more citizens do their part to defend democracy and subscribe for just $8.99 a month, the paper’s journalists can type in more light. The newspaper described this as an exciting time in an era where many distrust the media.

“Our jobs are more important now than ever before,” the post read. “A free society depends on a free press to uncover the truth, and to do so with adequate lighting not to strain its eyes.”

An hour after posting, the Facebook status had two likes. If able to secure five more subscriptions, the next milestone would likely be air conditioning.
