Now on his way to New Hampshire after claiming victory in Iowa, South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg started his day campaigning by flipping over a checkerboard in his office and declaring victory in the game he was losing.

Buttigieg and a staffer had taken a break from canvassing to play a game of checkers late morning. The staffer was winning by a large margin when Buttigieg flipped the board and laughed incessantly, declaring victory and thanking people in the room.

“I win!” Buttigieg said laughing as checkers pieces flew across the room. “We did the impossible, folks. I want to thank each and everyone of you for helping me jump so many pieces so quickly.”

Buttigieg has since sent staffers out to party stores to get balloons and confetti.
