The Hamster has learned Tuesday that the Major League Baseball season will begin in mid May, but will play at least the first two months over Zoom.

MLB has gotten clearance from federal and state authorities that this is a safe way to proceed. Every player and coach on every team will be in their respective homes for each game. All will be expected to have their microphone turned on, except for mound visits, in which coaches are allowed to text pitchers and catchers. Other rules include:

  • Headphones on players to limit distraction of household noises
  • Making sure everyone has an internet connection up to snuff
  • No screenshots without the express written consent of MLB

The league and players union are still working out the details. Concern over young children barging in the background is at the top of the union’s concern.
