Safety concerns around Major League Baseball are mounting, and the New York Mets’ recent decision to make COVID-19 their leadoff hitter might make matters worse.

Fans were concerned when COVID was added to the Mets 40-man roster, but were hopeful he wouldn’t make the team. However, the coaching staff seems committed – thanks to his defensive versatility and speed at the top of the lineup – to play him everyday.

“We think COVID can really spark our offense,” Mets Manager Luis Rojas said. “He’s got the ability to play all over the field. We’ll try him at short, second, the corners, all the outfield spots. Everywhere really.”

COVID’s COVID test results are not yet back from Major League Baseball.
