The stakes have been raised dramatically in March Madness bracket pools all across the country this year for reasons that cannot be explained.

Pool buy-ins have reportedly been up everywhere. Your family pool used to be a nice friendly $5-buy in; now you suddenly need to pony up for $1,400 if you want to get in on the action.

That pool with a bunch of friends from college that you usually make the picks for three minutes before the tipoff of the first game? Might want to do your research this year. Usually $10 to enter. This year, times that by 140.

You can buy a new Civic if you win. It’s unclear why these changes happened, though the Hamster is looking into it.
