Shortly after announcing it was removing the Confederate symbol from its flag, the state of Mississippi unveiled its new flag featuring Poochie the dog.

Citizens are largely mixed on the decision. Some see it as progress and a welcome change, while others see the addition of a new character as kind of hacky. Still, state officials are sticking by the move.

“This is about change,” Gov. Tate Reeves said. “It was clear what we needed all along was a new character. Something to freshen up the state.”

The state’s new motto is reportedly going to be “Mississippi: Our planet needs us.”
